Description: Geometric Data Analytics (GDA) seeks a part-time IT Systems Technician to help monitor, configure, update, and maintain our on-premises servers and workstations to support our team of research scientists and developers. Hours and workload are negotiable, with a general target of 8 hours per week at $25/hr. Work will mostly take place between the hours of 9a and 5p EST. Due to funding sources and data-security requirements, the candidate must be a United States citizen.

The position will be supported by experienced senior personnel who will provide mentoring and will continue to guide design and implementation. The new hire would have an opportunity to gain experience with production linux management, on-premises containerized/distributed computing infrastructure, and federal security requirements.

Required:

  • Experience and comfort with command-line Linux system management (Debian/Ubuntu package management, rescue booting, file-system manipulation, users and permissions, networking, ssh, rsync).
  • Experience and comfort with Gitlab web tools, git command-line interface, and collaborative Gitlab work-flow (issues, merge requests).
  • Experience and comfort with Bash and Python for reproducible system administration.
  • Experience and comfort with hardware tasks such as crimping ethernet cables, replacing hard drives, installing memory modules, installing rack-mounted servers, etc.

Desired:

  • Experience with Ansible.
  • Experience with containerized distributed computing (Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, ray).
  • Experience with standards-compliant systems – FIPS, incident response planning, vulnerability assessment, etc.

About GDA: GDA performs on government research and development contracts, either as a prime or as a subcontractor to various larger companies. GDA mixes agile software design practices with fundamental research practices to construct compelling demonstrations of research solutions to applied problems. GDA is currently staffed by Ph.D. and Master’s-level scientists and led by John Harer (CEO) and Paul Bendich (Chief Scientist). Our offices are located in downtown Durham, NC.

Education/Experience: Must have or be near completion of a BA or BSci degree in a computational field, or have significant prior experience in maintenance of critical infrastructure.
